Are you familiar with the FuelEU regulations? These regulations are continually evolving, so here is an update on the current mandates.
FuelEU Maritime applies to all ships over 5,000 gross tonnage that are used for transporting passengers or cargo for commercial purposes, regardless of their flag, when arriving at or departing from EU/EEA ports. These regulations are part of the European Green Deal, which aims to decarbonise the EU maritime sector by promoting the use of low-carbon fuel and shore power in ports.
So, what do the regulations mandate? FuelEU Maritime requires shipowners to monitor and report their fuel consumption and voyage data annually to a verifier, who will assess the ship’s greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity. Additionally, the regulations stipulate that shore power must be used when docked for containerships and passenger ships.
Starting from 31 August this year, new requirements will come into effect. Shipping companies will need to submit a FuelEU Monitoring Plan to the verifier. This plan must detail the methods for monitoring and reporting the amount of energy (including fuel type and consumption) used by ships during voyages and while at berth. Furthermore, ships calling at an EU/EEA port after 31 August will be required to submit their FuelEU Monitoring Plan to the verifier within two months of that port call.
